It would be handy to have any departmental costing reports to include the headcount for that department also

Please can you confirm which report you are referring to and what report in-particular you would want this added to?
You can view the total number of employees on a per dept. basis by going to:Settings > Departments
For the reports I do every month this should be added as very time consuming looking for this information
