State pension age automatically updating the NI code

It would be beneficial for the NI code to automatically update after an employee reaches state pension age or at least brings up a warning, otherwise, we fear some people will be missed and employer NI will continue to be deducted when it is no longer payable.

Warning for SPA is received prior to time of actual change due to staggered SPA dates.
this is misleading and we have to then check on gov.uk for correct date.

Automation of NI table letter changes would cause compliance issues in 2026. This is because the payroll software warning system has not been re-programmed to take into account the staggered retirement triggers this year as per the HMRC guidance at the website - State Pension age timetable - GOV.UK

I raised this as a concern recently and was told by support to log it here.

Meanwhile, I will be using the warning as a guide only and continuing to change it manually to enforce compliance and avoid HMRC NI error penalties, e.g. an employee was flagged this month (June) but their actual retirement date is September as per the staggered rule.

It is disappointing that the compliance programmers have not updated the software.

You already get a warning on the pay run warnings if an employee's NI letter needs to change due to a birthday etc.
